Nowhere did I say that BMW is a better company, I said that between those two cars, I think the BMW is better. And yes, comparing the two companies and what they produce today is silly. Porsche makes a different kind of car on average. However you have made a few grievous errors in your attempts to define BMW.
1. BMW has a very long and successful racing history, and still races today.
2. The fastest naturally aspirated production car ever, the Mclaren F1, was powered by a BMW engine.

@EarendilStar
BMW is better than Porsche? Its like comparing a lamborghini tractor to a ferarri enzo. BMW is overpriced “advanced consumer” product. Porsche has countless racing teams and it used to make the engines on Elefants the biggest anti-tank tracked vehicle ever made. BMW at the time settled with bikes. I think we can see here who would carry the tradition better.

Makes no sense. Should’ve been opposite. In terms of slalom and drifting.

Porsche can’t be taken in serious consideration doing cars of 245 hp.. even a golf r32 could beat this cayman and this is sad.
Porsche has to put contents in his cars, not only brand and image.

@akburst510

Do you? Did you get a aftermarket intercooler for the boost/lb increase? If you did then you would know it wouldn’t overheat. What about exhaust/downpipe to give the turbo some extra breathing?

so i’ll get to the point… I believe that a standar d 2nd gen cayman with some race-friendly options can easily beat a 135i in a track (provided the cayman driver knows what he’s doing).

i have heard countless accounts of professional and racing drivers saying that the cayman s is the best in production porsche available. a lot of 911 owners have traded in their cars for a cayman s. i’ve seen a lot of lap times in which the cayman s beats or comes in the same time as 911 turbo in the track. the mid-engine does wonders… simply amazing… the only thing possibly better than the 2nd gen cayman s is the 911 gt3 or the new 911 turbo s

hmmm no. It all depends on which gen porsche we’re talking about. The 1st generation (used in this test) cayman and cayman s are not very impressive. The 2nd gen (2009+ models) cayman and especially the 2nd gen cayman s have won so many awards. they are simply unbelievable. some say the 2nd gen cayman s is the best handling car in the world.

Not true, the 0-60 time the 135i would still beat the Cayman S. Where it would become interesting is on a track though, the Cayman S should get it.

The n54 engine in that 135i has such low lag that it pretty much eliminates that preference…that said a n54 will overheat while the Cayman keeps going. I own a 335i coupe with Juice Box 3 tune.

2.7 naturaly aspirated engine against a monster 135i twin turbo…
Unfair? comparison ..cost aside as you pay for 0ver 70 years of enviable heritage and quality with Porsche.

Both nice cars

@Nemo13535

NA > Turbo

Track wise at least.

$8,000 less…If you spent $8,000 in upgrades on the Bimmer it wouldn’t even be a fair comparison anymore.

@Yanp87 I remember Top Gear’s report on the Cayman. It’s suspiciously placed right in the middle of the Boxster and 911 in every way, power, performance, price etc. They didn’t make it as fast as it could be on purpose.

biggest difference is you drop 1g on the bmw and gain ~80hp and ~100 torque. Then it wouldn’t even be close around the track.

Jason Plato and Tiff Needell were professionnal race drivers, they both have a really good racing pedigree, so I think they showed the potential of those cars pretty well

Yanp87 Said,

well, the cayman S is as fast as a Porsche 911 carrera on certain tracks… pretty embarassing… if they really tried to make the cayman as fast as it can be, I’m not so sure it wouldn’t be faster than a 911

You shouldn’t talk about big boy’s cars when you drive a cayman, it’s a really good car, but it’s not a real Porsche. And the new 370Z is surprisingly good.
